An esmark compression bandage is used prior to turning the tourniquet on before surgery. Once it is used to expel venous blood from a limb (exsanguinate) that has had its arterial supply cut off by a tourniquet, it is removed so the extremity can be prepped and a stockinette and drape is applied for surgery.
